Opening Night of The Travelogues: India and The United States

In Event, The Travelogues on January 7, 2013 at 4:57 am

Opening night took place at Tempus Projects, Seminole Heights’ anchor for art and community. We had Josh Sullivan sharing stories and zines from his “52 Friends” project, Deanna Williams sharing her experiences teaching English and living as a foreign wife in India, and Vince Kral shared a video he created about a recent trip he took with his family to Iowa in an RV. 60 people heard about this series on the radio, in the newspaper and by word of mouth and came out in the drizzly rain to hear these folks’ stories, eat muffins from Cafe Hey and peruse books on the Blue Bird Books Bus. It was wonderful. Here is a recording from last night, in full. Every story, every laugh is on this audio file. Also, some photos from photographer Patrick Smith. Note the felt pins everyone was wearing, those were this week’s themed giveaway.

Some travel stories attendees shared with us that evening:

1) Wayne and Vicki Boulton – Turkey – Last October, we took a “bucket list” two week trip to Turkey. Beginning in the extraordinary city of Istanbul, a mixture of east and west as nowhere else, we traveled by boat counterclockwise around the country, with Cappadocia and its moon-like landscape and hot air balloon rides as one highlight. Do it!

2) Jennifer Logan – Cumberland Island – I went backpacking for five days on Cumberland Island National Seashore. Among seeing their famous wild horses and hiking 13 miles of virgin Atlantic seashore, I got to visit Plum Orchard, the summer “cottage” of the Carnegie family, and play the grand piano that is in their ballroom.

We hope to see you next week at Part Two of The Travelogues at Cafe Hey to hear stories from Macedonia and Costa Rica! On Friday, Jan. 11th at 7 PM, Nicole Kibert will share her experiences volunteering in the Peace Corps and Professor Ryan Cragun will share with us his time in Costa Rica working as a missionary. The next themed giveaway will be a pack of postcards with the poster artwork on them. Giving them out until they’re gone! See you then!
